Safety and fiesta celebrations
MOTORISTS' CORNER By Nimrod NL QuiƱones

Fiesta celebrations and smooth traffic flow never get to work hand in hand. If there is a fiesta even in the smallest kapilyas (chapels) in some sitio, expect traffic to be bad in that area.
Over the weekend, the San Roque Parish Church in Lipata, Minglanilla celebrated its feast and yes, traffic was bad in the area since the people had occupied almost the entire south-bound lane.
We would like to emphasize that we are not against such religious since these are part of our culture, what we'd like to see would be some semblance of order when such celebrations take place.
There were people who were probably barangay tanods tasked to do whatever they were supposed to do, but their presence did not really help.
What was very scary about it was that many people were in danger because of their plain stupidity or just their lack of interest in safety.
It was lucky nobody was hurt by buses or mini buses that run like they're headed to hell in the southern part of Cebu.
Fiesta committee members have to think harder about how to keep their celebrations safe. Please think very hard brothers and sisters.

"How come traffic at Gen. Maxilom Ave. is always heavy in the evenings and the CITOM has not done anything about it?"
We received this question via a text message from somebody, who seems very irked at the fact that he or she was stuck in traffic late at night.
The reason for such are the numerous vehicles parked on the road (yes, on and not along) that have been allowed to do so by the traffic authorities.
Late one Friday night, we called the CITOM base to inquire what was the problem at Gen. Maxilom and were just told that it is a usual thing during the evenings as if dismissing us as a prank caller.
What is CITOM going to do about this? Are we going to wait for the time when traffic will get stalled in more areas around Cebu City because you guys are just sitting there and doing nothing?
The number of complaints you have received is not the real number of complaints. There are probably a hundred times more.
The texter said that he or she is "begging for CITOM people, who are paid taxpayers' money, to do something."

Another reader sent us e-mail about the traffic situation in the Banilad area. He requested anonymity and we respect that.
He said: "Sir, what is the plan of the government about the situation in Banilad? I pass the place everyday to take my kids to school and I waste not only fuel, but a lot of time because of the traffic.
"Is this the reason why Mayor Tom wants the people out of the city during the ASEAN Summit, so there would be no traffic? Us motorists are always on the loosing (sic) end. Poor us...Poor City of Cebu."
I do know of some friends sir that leave their houses very early to avoid the traffic in that area. They save time and fuel, but spend their savings on coffee somewhere.
It's really sad to feel abandoned by our government.
